Tho grain crops in tho Wairarapa are looking magnificent, and are in an unusually forward condition. Feed is exceptionally, abundant everywhere. The wool clips are also above tho average, and the quality is very satisfactory. There is a good demand for stock Prices are on the up "grade. Farmers arc afraid of overstocking^ remembering last season's drought. Rain set in hi the forenoon, but a heavy continuous rainfall is hoped for. The weather is materially cooler compared with preceding days. ■ . .

FEILDING, December 8.
The Chamber of Commerce last night set up a committee of business men to advertise the advantages of the district as a stock centre. The nresident, Mr Tolley, in proposing the formation of tho committee pointed out ihat, with the "opening of the Main Trunk Line, Feilding must mako an effort to retain its position a« tho chief stock centre of the North Islandf the rates tor stock here being, looked on as tho ruling rates for the North Island.
WELLINGTON, December 8. Two cases of assault and robbery occurred in tho city last night. Tho victim of the first outrage was Georgo Reid, a fireman, who when proceeding along Thorndon Quay was tackled by a man and gripped by the throat. Instantly three Either men appeared, and the gang went through Reid's pockets. Forty minutes later.P. Bennett, while walking in Ghuznee Street, was seized and-his rockets emptied.

A sharp shock of.earthquake was felt hero at 11.55, accompanied by light rain cmd a ha,il squall.
' CHRISTCHURGH, December 8. A smart shock o.f earthquake lasting several seconds, was felt at 11,55. No damage is reported. Cheviot reports that two severe shocks occurred at 6.45 and 11.55, accompanied by low rumbling, which greatly, alarmed tho residents of the township. Chimneys fell at Hawkeswocd and at Mendip articles in- tho homestead were broken. Hanmer also reports two shocks.
AUCKLAND, December 8
A meeting of clergymen, attended by about 100, representing different denominations of the? Protestant Church this morning, passed a resolution that n. Christian Unity Society be formed, which shall afford to all who join it opportunities for common prayer, mutual study, and the discussion and cultivation of a spirit of Christian brotherhood, and that a co;mm.ittee !>e formed to draw up -a constitution.
