English papsrs state that Lady de Bathe (Mrs Langtry) won £20,000 in bets by tho success of her horso'Ycntoi in the Cesarewitch Stakes.
The latest report about the. jockey Hewitt is that he is returning to Sydney to be married to the daughter of a member of the local betting ring. Early next year he goes to fulfil a riding engagement at Austria. Master Soult and Elysian will be sold by auction at tho conclusion of the Auckland Racing Club's summer meeting. Presumably the other horses in the estate of the late Mrs Cooinbo will also come under tho hammer.
With an acceptance of 18 in the Auckland .Cup, everything at present points to a strong field contesting tho big two-mile race on Boxing Day. Zimmerman still stands his ground, as do al lth c top weights, down to All Red (8.6), with the exception of Frisco and, of- course, Signor, Mr Ebwry is eviden 3 still undecided about his pair, Bobrik t and Downfall and jjossibly both v 11 start; but such a proceeding is hardly likely. Carl Rosa, which is one of tho most fancied locally, and Diabolo,' aro both in the list—in fact, in looking through there seems every likehood of a field of at least 14 going to the post
Bobrikoff continues doing light work On the Napipr Park tracks. The champion has boon taken in a number of doubles for the .Auckland Cup and Railway Handicap. He is considered a certain starter for the two-mile race if hia preparation progresses favour-
In Canada recently a jockey aged 103 years wen a race. The man is a French Canadian named Taillifer, and he began his racing career as a stable boy at the ago of eighteen. Sines then lie has ridden in over six thousand races. To celebrate his 103 rd birthday, ho donned spurs once again and secured third place in the race in which ho competed. H« is* the oldest jockey in the world.
Although C. Jenkins and G. Prico have now been riding for over twelve years, both these horsemen are still an keen and active as the best of- tho youngsters. Price does not perhaps get as many good mounts as, Jenkins, Imfc that he has lost none of his ability ho showed by the. excellent races he rode on Eclogue at Feilding. His finish on tho Sylvia Park colt in the Maiden Scurry was .worth going a long way to 6"O. According to a writer in tho "N.ZTimes,'* onoof tho races at tho recent Feilding meeting was pretty strong. In his remarks he says: "Thero was only one event of an unsatisfactory naturo •it. the fixture. The writer is of opinion that had a stipendiary official been supervising the running h«f would have called tho stewards together without a moment's hesitation, and placed certain plain, facts before them. -^.Tho Letting, with all tho big, punters eagerly snapping up a short price1 about one starter, and the gallery display of ono horseman after entering the straight when it was quite safe to do so, all clearly pointed in one direction—that heads had been put together. As already indicated, tho strongrst evidence was forthcoming that such was the sase. Needless to say, not a little discussion subsequently ensued among those cqua'ly competent and fearless to express their opinions about such doings, especially when one of those most closely connected therewith should, from tho position he occupies in racing circles, have been one of the very last to be a party to such a barefaced arrangement to dupe the unsuspecting portion of backers of whom still a good mairv remain. Readers are purposely left in" doubt as to whether success attended the little scheme or not!" / ■ "
