MARTON CHAMBER OF COMMERCE.

The monthly mooting of the Marton Chamber of Commerce was held in the Borough Council Chambers oil Tuesday night.
PRESENT.—Messrs F. Purnell (in the chair), C. B. Collins, F. G. Carson, E. Broad, J. Mathers, H. Richardson, J A. Bush, A W. Woolby, and F. R. H. Brlos.
MINUTES—The minutes of the previous meeting were read and passed. S>VT.MMING BATHS.—It was moved that this question be allowed to stand over because.of the absence of water, but that plans and specifications of the Wanganui Girls' High School baths be put before the Council with the recommendation that wb.cn a-poll is taken for tho raising of a special loan for furthering a water supply scheme, the loan'will include sufficient for the construction of swimming batbs.—Carried. ARTESIAN BORE.—It was moved that Mr Newman, the member for the* district, bo asked to make inquiries, from tho Railway Department 'as to what steps are to be taken in connection with the abandonment of the boring of tho artesian well at tho Junction.—Carri»Vd.
From -the remarks, it appears-. th at this work has been carried out in a very half-hoartc'd style. The Railway Department have "no boring plant of their own nnd the work bad been carried OTit by day labour with an obsolete plant. This would be quoted as another attempt to procure water and help to rotard progress in th s dfreo POST AND 'TELEGRAPH XtEGULATIONS. Express Delivery.—There is no provision made for immediate delivery of urgent letters, parcels, etc., in Marton. In Wellington, by payment of an additional charge of 3d ai^d using a spocial stamp, this is possible. The motion that it \:e recommended to the Postmaster General that, such alteration be mads in Marton was put and carried.. _ ■
Special Messenger for Telegram and Parcel Delivery.-^-It was .moved that as there was no immediate necessity for such c system tho matter lie allowed to drop.—Carried.
Telephone Bureau.—At present the general public may only use.the telephono between the hours of 9 a.m. and 5 p.m., and from '/-p.m. to 8 p.m. 'These aro tho hours^that the Post Offic-3 _is open. Moved that request be made that tho bureau be open from 8 a.m. to 8 ,p.m. for the use of the general public. Tho subscribers only enjoy the privilege at present.—Cajried. Direct Telephone Communication betweon Wangaehur Turakina and Fcrdell.—Under the present 'system, to speak any of theso places it is necessary to communicate first with Wanganui. It 'takes some time to do tKi, and a motion to recommend that a new wire bo laid direct,to these places was put and carried.
Telephone Communication with Wellington after 5 p.m.—This was considered unnecessary, and a 'motion that it should not 'be brought forward, was carried.
Use of Telephone unt'l Midnight.— At ■ present. the hour of -closing is 8 p.m. It a~-°ars that the time may be extended providing there is a sufficient number of subscribers, and the secretary-, Mr C. B. Collins, was asked to look int-> the matter and report. New Railway Timetable.—A letter was received from the Wanganui Chamber of Commerce asking that a
■delegate be sent to a meeting to be held in Wanganui on Wednesday, Ifith December, to discuss the question of train timetables li; was decided that Mr F. Purnell should ; represent tfi.e Marton Chamber, and a motion to bring forward the matter of: an extra mail train to and fr'pj& : Wellington was put and carried. "".'•<.' "Borough Boundaries —Mr F. G. Carsen is obtaining signatures of ratepayers to the petition, and will report on tiio progress made at the next■'mreting on Mi January. Distrzct Court.—Any civil action for £1.00 must at present be "tried in Wan-, ganui. Last year, roughly; speaking, half the oases tried were Marton^ cases, and it was moved that.Mr Collins interview tho other solicitors with referonco to tho aclvisabilitv of petitioning for the holding of a District Court in Marton, and report on the matter.
