NAPIER, January 5

The representative cricket match, Otago v. Hawke's Bay, was commenced to-day in beautiful weather, on a perfect wicket.

Winning the toss, Otago batted N first, Wilson and Ayles opening to Cotterill and Redgrave. The batsmen showed confidence from the start, the score mounting rapidly, despite numerous changes of bowling. The century was passed under the hour, and the batsmen continued to paste the fowling. The score at 12.30 stood at 145 for no wickets:—Wilson 103, Ayles 33. At the luncheon adjournment the Wilson-Ayles partnership was still tindissolved, the total being 1-77—Wilson 119, Ayles 45.
