Mr Ewen MacDonell, who joined the police for^e.in punedin in 1875, was promoted t.-> sub-inspector m 1899, and to inisnector in 1900, died at Petone on Wednesday night. He retired, from the service on" 31st December last.
The death took place at his residence, Awahiiri, on Wednesday night, 1: of: Mf John Whittle,' at the ripe old age qf 94 years. Mr Whittle came to New Zealand 30 years ago, and sett'ed at Awahuri, having remained there ever since. Death was due to senile decay. Mrs Whittle prede2eased her husebanciBy ten years. Mr Whittle was^oiie of the niOvSt respected settlers of the district.
Mrs Simeon, wife of Fred P. Simeon,1 died in Wellington yesterday, aged B5 years. Deceased was a half-casta, wellknowr. among the Maoris as Kurakitirp and alvo .as Akanihi. Sho was a clrsj'a rqlative of the, late Chiefs Toliu and Te Whiti. For many years she had been of great assistance to the- Native Land Courts in unravelling inticHte ensas by reason of her intimate knowledge of the lineago of the Taranaki natives. She was born at Te Awamutu, i\ the-Wai-kato* district. Her gra-ndfathor was a. noted tohungra. Beside® thi Avidower,' she leaves j> family of ten.
