HURRICANE IN MELBOURNE. UNPARALLELED DUST STORM. PROPERTY AND SHIPPING DAMAGED. MELBOURNE, November 22, A storm of unusual violence raged all clay yesterday, and did a great deal ol damage to house property, and to growing trees in roads and gardens; whilo in the bay many small craft were completely wrecked. No such gale has been experienced for years. The wind began to blow strongly from a northerly direction at about daylight, and as it increased in force it rose dense clouds of dust, which swept through the city 'n thick masses. Being Sunday, no water carts were out, and as the hurricane grew fiercer and fiercer it just hurled the dust along in tons like a desert simoom. Street trees were uprooted by the score. The plantations along Stlvilda Road and Sydney Road suffered severely. Branches were torn oft' trees in the Dominion and Botanical Gardens, while in the suburbs, particiilarly in Hawthorn and Elsternwick the streets were Jittered with broken boughs, and in some cases were obstructed [whole trees laid prostrate. Hoardings were flattened in many places, and roofs and verandahs were torn away. In the city many windows were blown in. At the Cafe Biiii, Swanson Street, a large platc-glars sheet overs the doorway burst outwards like a bombshell, and covered the pavement with pieces of thick glass. Some ladies passing had a remarkably narrow escape of being injured by it. At Brunswick a large plate-glass window in the newly-con-structed shop of Tye and Co. burst inwards under the pressure of the wind, and two verandahs in Stewart Street were torn away and blown to pieces, while the brick wall of a shop was partly broken down by the violence of the storm. At Port Melbourne a liouss in course of 'Construction, about threeparts finished, was utterly demolished in Rcss Street. The storm lashod the water of the Bay to fury, and the crews of -small craft, many of which had gone out on Saturday night fishing, had terrible experiences in beating back to safety. Somo of them were wrecked in the endeavour. At Frankston the sailing boats Nellie and Minerva wore driven ashore safely, though in an exhausted stata. The dust which was whirled out over the Bay rendered shipping movements highly dangerous. Much damage was done to telegraph and telephone lines. A telegraph pole was blown clown in Latrobe Street, one at Caulfielcl and six between Oakleigh nud Dandenong. At Toorak Road, South Yarra. the roof of the large store attached to the bicrk work's at the corner of Toorak Road and River Street was lifted off, and shot acorss River Street on to the top of the roof of a privato residence, there damaging it considerably. Tho storm culminated about 5 o'clock in a final mighty burst. Then tho wind veered round to tho west, and died down as the rain fell gently. The Amokura arrived at Auckland yesterday morning, having visited the Kermadecs and other islands for the purposes of the searching for castaways or wreckage, and replenishing the depot. There was no trace of the Clan McPherson or other vessels. "~
