DEFENCE BILL AND CANTEENS.
A CHRISTCHURCH PROTEST
(Per Press Af.-soc;ation.)
CHRISTCHURCH, December 3. At a meeting of the Christchurch Proliibition League, the following resolution in regard to canteens at military camps under the new Defence Bill was carried: " That the Christchurch Prohibition League, representing not only the no-iicense party, but. iii this matter the whole of temperance sentiment of the city,'"expresses'it's'-siyVrise that the new Defence Bill .submitted to the House of Representatives contains no provision for the abolition of the canteen. It views as quite inadequate the suggested provision that persons under ■21 years; of- aga shall- not bo allowed to enter canteens, and urges that the only satisfactory settlement of the question in the judgment of the majority of the electors of the Dominion will be the abolition of the system. It protests strongly against the continuance of the custom, proved to be not.only unnecessary, but..pernicious in the extreme, especially in view of the fact that tho youth of the Dominion are to he compelled to enter camp every year, and it calls upon the Premier and the Minister of Defence and the members of the House to amend the Bill in this r articular at once."
