RESOLUTIONS BY LOCAL CHURCHES.

The above question was the subject of unanimously carried resolutions at the local churches yesterday, as follows :— ST. PAUL'S. " That this congregation expresses its surprise that the new Defence Bill submitted to the House of Representatives contains no provision for he abolition o the canteen. It views as quite inadequate the suggested provision that persons under 21 years of age shall not be allowed to enter canteens, and urges that the only satisfactory settlement of the question in tho judgment of the majority of th.3 electors of the Dominion will be the abolition of the system. It protests strongly against the continuance of the custom* proved to be not only unnecessary, but pernicious in the extreme, especially in view of the fact that the youth of the Dominion are to be compelled to enter camp every year, and it calls upon the Premier and the Minister of Defence and the members or the House to amend the Bill in this particular at once. >: (

BAPTIST CHURCH. "That this congregation, learns with surprise- and regret that there is no provision in the new Defence Bill now before Parliament for the discontinuance of the demoralising system of military canteens. Seeing that it is proposed that the youth of the Dominion shall be trained'to arms, ;; and to that end go into camp annually, this congregation most earnestly and emphatically protests facilities being provided for injuring tho health and lowering the moral tone of our young men by inuring them to the demoralising d'rirfkmg customs of the past." CHURCH OF CHRIST. " That this congregation learns with alarm that the Defence Bill now before Parliament allows for the continuance of the pernicious system of canteens at military encampments in the Dominion. In view of the proposal to compel the youth of our Dominion to enter camp every year, this congregation most emphatically protests against any facilities being provided whereby the health and ■•morals of our youth will be endangered, and it calls upon the Premier and Defence Minister and every '. member of the House to amend the Bill I in this particular."
