THE COMMITTEE'S REPORT,
MELBOURNE, December 6. j The Select Committee's report says that the organisation of the Cable' Association is s/j complete that it seems almost impossible for another associa- t tion to start and succeed without Governmetn assistance for the first ,four or five years. It was contended by, the Association that while it had pass-'
Ed the whole benefit :;of the recent' reduction to the public by means of increased messages, figures supplied by the telegraph authorities showed that while the Cable Association increased tho service at a cost to themselves of about £183 per month, they were saving as a result of the reduction at the rate of £5540 per month. Senators Pulsford and Chatsway pretoen.ted dissentingr reports, .in which, they stated with regard to the alleged monopoly that a new service might be established. The evidence disclosed a
fairly generous dealing with the ; Prep,* outsido the Association, especially 'in* view of the fact that New Zealand was included. The Cable had enlarged the service as a result of the ; reduction of rates. Some doubt was j thrown on the Telegraph Department's j figures, and there was ►no reason to ■ question the accuracy of the Associa- ' ticn's figures. \ ', Mr Chatsway dissented generally on j tho ground that the report was
against tha weight of tho evidence, but he advised a reduction of the Australian land charges to the New Zealand rate.
