HALCOMBE NOTES.
(Froui Our Own Correspondent.) Mr TiJos. Watson, toiumander ov boy scouts in the Oroua district, visited Jtialcombe last Monday night, and gave a stirring lecture- on xhe advantages of the movement, as inculcating physical and moral influences to boys as well as an initiative to. military education. Ac the conclusion of his most interesting remarks Mr Beckett, of Halcombe, was unanimously-elected scout master, and the names of eleven boys were given in, of which Mr Beckett will form two pa' trols. This training will be of inestimable benefit to the boys and we are pleased to contribute our mite for the Denelit ot the Dominion and tiie British liimpire.
The Debating Society held a concert and drama entitled "An Ugly Customer," last Wednesday night to pay out or pocket expenses, and had a Jargo and appreciative attendance.
On Thursday night a. large number of friends got up a social and smoke concert to farewell Mr D. McLachlan, our genial railway porter, who, alter a sojourn of over two years with us, has been transferred to Ohingaiti. Ever since he has been with us he has taken an active part in athletics, amateur theatricals, etc., and has been a general favourite by his readiness to oblige, unfailing good temper, and civility to all. We are heartily sorry to lose him and wish him heaps of luck wherever he goes. As a proof of goodwill he was presented witn a portmanteau and shaving outfit.
I Oil Friday night the Empire Picture I and Orchestra Company played here to* a fair house, the pictures were quite new and up-to-date and were greatly admired, especially the lovely natural tinted scenery in the railway trip through the charming island of Ceylon. The music was excellent, and as the manager promised us a return trip it is to be hoped that a bumper i house will reward this clever and deserving company. The cup match between Colyton and Halcombo was played here on Satur- ! -lay. Colyton went in first and were disposed ol: for the small total of 32. Halcombe then went in and made 56. Colyton in their second innings, with 7 wickets down for 42, declared, and Haloombe sent in Dun lop and Goldsbury, who played out time. The match was a win for Haloom.be on the Ist inings, and as will ba seen by the scores, was a close call for a win by 10 wickets as the Halcombe total was within one run of the gross number ol'! the Colyton score. However, the game was played in the most friendly and sociable spirit and the Colytons proved good follows and good sports. They were entertained by the Halcpmbe men, Mr R. G. Goebel being the caterer and the good things was thoroughly enjoyed. Our next fixture is Feilding at Feilding on Saturday. Appended are the scores:— COLYTON.—Ist innings.
