On his arrival at Hobart by the Moeraki, Mr Will Crooks was handed a cable recalling him to England immediately. Midshipman Rouvier, son of the French rear-admiral, who was sent on a mission to Japan, has become engaged to Mlle. Isabelle Ito, daughter of Admiral Ito, who was the hero of the Yalu battle. Miss Amy Curie, M.A., of Wanganui, has been appointed an asistant mistress at Wellington Girls’ College vice Miss Elsie Johnston (Petone), who had been appointed, but had declined to take up the position. News has been received in Sydney from London that there is no hope of Sir Frederick Darley’s recovery. Sir Frederick Matthew Darley was a member of the Legislative Council in New South Wales from 1868 to 1886, when he was appointed Chief Justice. He was appointed Lieut.-Governor in 1891 and was a member of the South African War Commission in 1902. He went Home recently for the benefit of his health.
