LOCAL GOVERNMENT.
! A WELCOME ANNOUNCEMENT
In the House on Saturday afternoon the Prime Minister announced that the matter of Local Government would be considered next session, when he hoped to submit a comprehensive Local Government Bill. (" Hear, hoar," from both sides of the House). It would deal with the whole question of local government throughout the country. . The Law Drafting Department was now n aking the searching investigation that it was first necessary to make. He hoped that members would .see tno necessity for the abolition of a number of the local bodies. The scheme could not be completed without that and pome sacrifice would have to be made. Tho scheme would take some of the '•oad board work that Parliament had at present to do away from the House. Mr Massey said he was delighted to hear this. He considered the present system utterly inadequate and out of j date. It should have been dealt with and improved many years ago. He hoped the whole subject would receive j the consideration it deserved next ses--1 sion.
