PERSONAL.

Dr Bennett, of Auckland, is at present in town and is staying at Chavanne’s Hotel.

Canon Pollock and Rev H. Kennedy arrive in New Zealand on January 20th to arrange for the general mission in connection with the Church of England. His Lordship the Bishop of Wellington, arrived in town yesterday. The Bishop will officiate at the prize-giving at the Collegiate School this evening. Mr Kenneth Sisam, chosen as the Auckland candidate for the Rhodes Scholarship, has a brilliant scholastic career. He obtained the B.A. degree in 1908, and soon afterwards the senior University Scholarship for English. His athletic record is a good one.

A Sydney cable says that Sir William Lyne had a sudden seizure on Saturday. His condition is, however, not serious, and he is improving. Mr R. R. Creagh, the newly-appoint-ed engineer for the Gonville-Castlecliff Tramway Board, arrived in town yesterday and was taken over the proposed tram route. He is leaving for the north to-day.

Mr J. G. Gilberd has resigned from the Napier Fire Brigade after 33 years’ service. He was one of the original members and organisers of the Brigade. His services to the town as a fire-fight-er have been much appreciated by the citizens.

Still another gap has been made in the fast thinning ranks of old Wanganui residents. We refer to the death of Mrs Emily Isabel Elinor Gower, who passed over to the great majority yesterday at the age of 83 years. The deceased lady, who was the relict of the late Mr George Gower was intimately associated with the early history of Wanganui, where her husband was a chemist and druggist. For many years she resided at Turakina, but latterly has lived with her daughter, Mrs Wm. Pinches. She was the mother of Messrs A. A. Gower (chemist) and A. A. Gower (publisher of the “Herald.” To the bereaved family we tender our sympathy.
