SENSATIONAL ESCAPES

Reports from tho country show that destructive bush fires aro in all direc-, tions, and are especially bad in the Blue Mountains and outh Coast district, where wide areas have been swept. Great damage was done at Cowra. The fires are the worst on record. A thousand bags of wheat and hundreds of acres of standing corn, vast tracts of grass, and miles of fencing ■ have been destroyed. Large numbers of stock have perished.' Many' settlers lost their homes. Tho damage is estimated at £100,000. Some sensational escapes of firefighters have been reported. Settlers were driven for refuge into creeks and dams. . Rabbits largely helped to spread the fire, for their fur, catching fire, they mshed madly', amongst the standing crops.
