LAUNCESTON, December 15
The steamer . Papanui struck■■n rock —probably an ifncharter one—six miles west of Waterhouso island,- at 8.30 o'clock on Monday evening. Ths captain is reticent, but it has been learned that the vessel was travelling at tliH rate of 13. knots an hour, and she brought to a sudden standstill by the terrific shock. The boats wera goi ready. Tho barque Gassa, observing tho signals of distress, went to the steamer's assistance, but the Papffnui floated off easily after being aground
