Received December 17, 9.25 p.m. BRUSSELS, December 17. Embolism was the causa of King Leopold's death, which was peaceful. The King suddenly said to the doctor, " I am choking." Morphia was injected, but he died almost immediately.
Prince Albert arrived shortly afterwards and reverently kissed the dead monarch.
King Leopold 11. was born at Brussels on April 9th, 1835, and was the son of King Leopold 1., whom he succeeded in 1865. He travelled much in Europe, Asia Minor, and Egypt. He was the founder and ruling Sovereign of the Congo Free State, a position which has madb his name execrated. He married in 1853 the Archduchess Maria of Austria, who died in 1902. He had three daughters. The eldest, Princess Louise, married in 1875 Prince Philip of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha, but the marriage was dissolved on January loth. 1906, under conditions which estranged the King and his daughter. The second daughter, Prince Stephanie, widow of tho late Crown Prince Rudolf «f Austria, married Count Lonyay: in 1899. The third daughter is Princess Clementine. The heir presumptive is Prince Albert, second son of the late Duke of Hanover, second brother of King Leopold.
