THE POPE'S SYMPATHY WITH THE
EMPEROR.
ROME, J/une 29. The "hews of the assassination caused consternation in aJI circles and brought forth the greatest commtiseration for the Emperor Francis Joseph. Cardinal Merry Del Val broke the news to tbe Pope, who was terribly shocked. He sent a long message of condolence and benediction to the Emperor Francis Joseph, and offered prayer*'for the souls of the departed.
