An Inspector-General of the monarchy's land and sea forces, Francis
Ferdinand voyaged aboard r-he Dreadnought Yiribusinitis, from Trieste . to Metcovic. He was welcomed at Mostar, whei©, in deference to local susceptibilities, in responding to tlie mayoral address he spoke partly in German but chiefly in Serborean. He proceeded to the army headquarters near Serajevo with a view to attending the manoeuvres in the mountains to the south-west of Sfs&j&ro. * ■ . There were two attempts at assassination. The first was during the drive to the xreoeption at the Serajevo Town Hall; when a compositor threw what is ~ "called a bottle bomb, filled with nails 'and lead, filings. It did not explode, until the car passed, but the explosion waa very violent, and fragments pierced the iron shutters of many shops in the vicinity. TAventy, including memfcero of the suite, and several women -a«<fcchildren, were slightly injured.
