A REIGN OF TRAGEDIES.
FRANCIS JOSEPH'S CAREER.
TJio last visitation that has come upon the house of Austria is the fifth tragedy durin" t«ie record reign of the Emperor Francis Joseph, who is now nearmg his end. Within a few days of his coronation as King' of Hungary came the terrible tidings that his brother, Archduke Maximilian, who in an unhappy moment had become Emperor of Mexico, had been captured by the, Mexican insurgents and shot. His only son, the Crown Prince Rudolph, perished under tragic circumstances in 1889, while his wife, the Empress Elizabeth, was assassinated at Geneva in IS9S by an Italian anarchist. Then there was the extraordinary disappearance o£ "Joliann Orth," another heir who married beneath him, renounced his claim and sailed away m a vessel which was supposed to have* been wrecked. Added to this mournful chapter is a lons list of family quarrels and scandals which has kept the urns of Fnvricis Joseph before tho word almost continually during his lone; reign.
