THE INDIAN UNREST.
RECENT TROUBLE REGARDED AS
SERIOUS
LONDON, May 16. Reports from India state that the recent rising was serious and well-organis-ed. The moderation of the authorities at Delhi encouraged the mob to extreme violence at Lahore and Amritsar, where several whites were killed. At both places the military were compelled to use severe repressive measures. A great mob overawed one quarter of Amritsar, and machine guns were played on them. The Gurkhas could not be restrained. A thousand lives were lost. Equally severe repressive measures were necessary at Lahore. It is believed that four thousand were killed and wounded altogether. This energy was not expected by the leaders, and the difficulty has simmered down.
