A SERIOUS CHARGE. OPOTIKI, June 11. Hilton Crosswell, aged 38, was charged with breaking and entering the residence of Mrs. Margaret vloody, aged 91, with intent to comnit a crime, and assaulting Mrs. Moody with intent to commit rape. Evidence was given that the accused had tried to force unwelcome attentions on another woman without success. Then he tried to enter Mrs. Moody’s house through a bedroom window. He was told to go away, but and on Mrs. Moody opening the door and hitting him with a stick, he threw her down and acted with indecent intent. The accused told the police he was drunk and was only defending himself. He was committed for trial, DRUNKEN MOTORIST PUNISHED. INVERCARGILL, June 11. Jas. Kilkelly for driving a motor car while drunk, was released on 12 months’ probation on condition that he never drives a car and also takes out a prohibition order. The accused collided with a post, and counsel said the damage would cost £lOO. His Worship remarked that Northern Magistrates were sending offenders to prison, and next time probably he would do the same.
