Town Talk

Busy Ambulance. On Saturday, the Wanganui Free Ambulance had a busy time, attending five cases and travelling 150 miles. Annual Hockey Match The annual match between the Wanganui and Wellington Wesley Hockey Clubs is to be played on the Gonville Park this morning. A large number of teams will also participate in a hockey tournament to-day at Gonville Park. Injured at Rugby. Two senior players suffered injuries in Rugby matches in Wanganui on Saturday. C. Reynolds, of the Marist Club, a forward, had two stitches in a cut above his right eye. Kenny, another Marist senior, had to leave the field with a sprained ankle. Rugby Match Stopped. Spectators encroaching on the playing field is said to be the reason which prompted a Rugby referee at Waitotara to stop a match on Saturday before full time had been played out. Waverley and Waitotara were the contestants and Waitotara was leading when play terminated. Fractured a Knee. As the result of the cycle he was riding skidding when he was passing along Bell Street opposite the Gospel Hall yesterday morning, John Badington, 16 years of age, whose parents reside in Dublin Street, suffered a fractured knee. He was removed to the Public Hospital. Band to Play. The Queen Alexandra’s Own Mounted Rifles Band is to play a speci-ally-selected programme at the representative Rugby match in Wanganui to-day. When the two teams take the field the National Anthem will be played in honour of the birthday of His Majesty King George V. Fractured Leg. As a result of a fall while visiting relatives at Porewa, Mrs Kees, of Mangaweka, suffered a fracture of her right leg. She received medical attention from Dr. Church and on Saturday she was conveyed to the Wanganui Public Hospital by the Free Ambulance.

Post Office Fire. The chimney of a gas fire set alight a wooden partition in the motor registration branch of the Wanganui Post Office on Saturday morning shortly after 9 o’clock. The outbreak was quickly extinguished with the aid of chemicals, and although the Fire Brigade was called out its services were not required. Road Improvement. The work of cutting off several corners on the Ben Nevis Hill, on the Turakina-Marton Road, has reached a stage at which a good idea of the forthcoming improvement may be obtained. The recent rainfall has made the surface of the newly-formed portions rather rough, and motorists require to exercise a good deal of caution in negotiating this hill. Main Road Detour. Motorists using the main highway between Wanganui and Bulls are being compelled to make a detour through Marton owing to reconstruction work on that portion of the road between Heaton Park Road and Makirikiri South Road. This section is being prepared for tar-sealing operations, which are proceeding apace. Though the new bridge over the Makirikiri South Stream is open to one-way traffic, motorists will find the safest detour through Bonny Glen and Marton. Unusually Mild Weather. The wintry weather usually associated with that period of the year within three weeks of the “shortest day” has not been in evidence this year. During the week-end the weather was unusually mild. On Saturday and yesterday the minimum temperature registered at the New Zealand Friends’ School, St. John’s Hill, was 52deg. Fahr., while the maximum on Saturday was 65deg. In the 24 hours up to 6 p.m. on Saturday, .12in. of rain fell, while in the corresponding period yesterday, .05in. was registered.

Travelling Rugby Teams. In charge of Mr Arthur Guy, one of the Taranaki Rugby Union’s trio of selectors, the visiting Taranaki Rugby team arrived in Wanganui yesterday and put up at the Criterion Hotel. The Wanganui Colts team, which is to play a Taranaki B team, left Wanganui for New Plymouth early yesterday afternoon, in charge of Mr C. Mullany, of Taihape, one of Wanganui’s three selectors. Country players of both the Wanganui teams arrived in the city on Saturday night. They stayed at Spriggens’ Hotel. Golfers Exchange Visits The King’s Birthday holiday is marked this year by an exchange of visits among golfers in which several clubs in and around Wanganui are participating. Marton and Feilding players will pay a visit to the Wanganui Golf Club’s Belmont links to play an interclub match, while there will also be a team from the Wanganui Club to play at Patea. Seafield Golf Club will send a team to Waverley to play in an annual match. Wanganui is also represented in the Wairarapa championship tournament at Masterton, where B. M. Silk will, to-day, play in one of the semi-finals.

Airwoman’s Successes A very fine performance was established on Saturday by Miss Eva Parkinson, of Waitotara, who represented the Western Federated Flying Club at the Masterton Aero Club’s pageant. Accompanied by Flying-Officer Ian Keith as passenger, she flew ACZ to Masterton and won the landing competition for A and A endorsed pilots, tied for first place in the bombing competition, and took second place in the message-dropping competition. These were the only three competitions for which she entered. In addition she also won the “Hidden Treasure” offered to the pilot who landed a ’plane arriving at the Masterton airport for the pageant between 2 o’clock and 4.30 o’clock on Saturday afternoon with the tail skid nearest the “treasure.” Altogether she had a very successful afternoon. The ’plane was to have returned to Wanganui yesterday, but was prevented by heavy mists in the Wairarapa district.
