TWENTY LOCAL BODIES RECENT DECISIONS RECALLED. Since October of last year at least 20 local bodies and public bodies throughout tho Dominion have restored the whole or part of the salary cuts to members of their staffs who were affected by the almost general reductions during the depression Of these local bodies seven are city or borough councils, five harbour boards, and three fire boards. It shows that the Bluff Harbour Board was tho first to restore a proportion of its employees’ wages, and that the latest move in this direction was made by the Palmerston North City Council, on Monday last. Auckland Harbour Board—(Decision to increase the salaries of employees by 5 per cent, as from November 1, with adjustments to avoid inequality or injustice—November 14. 1933. Auckland City Council—Decision to restore the 10 per cent, cut in the wages of employees working under tho local bodies’ labourers’ award— November 17, 1933. Southland Education Board—Decision to restore the second reduction in salaries imposed on the office staff in 1931 —-December 15, 1933. Lyttelton Harbour Board —Decision to restore one-half of the 10 per cent, cut -in the salaries and wages made in 1931—December 20 193. Upper Hutt Borough Council—l Decision on a 5 per cent, increase in the wages of the electrical staff and a “suitable increase’’ for the clerical staff—May 21,1934. Timaru Harbour Board—Decision to restore 5 per cent, of the cuts in its officers’ and employees’ salaries and wages—May 26, 1934. Palmerston North City Council—lncrease of wages and salaries of £250 a year and less by 5 per cent. —May 28, 1934.
