MYSTERY DANCE
Variety, it is said, is the spice of life, and this is to bo found when the Palais do Danse holds a special function to commemorate special events, and such was the mystery dance held on Monday evening in the Druids’ Hall. Special preparations for a jolly evening culminated in a brilliant success, and the hall, always renowned for its genial atmosphere, rang with the happy laughter of the throng that whirled to the rhythmic beat of the Gaiety Dance Band, under the capable direction of Airs. Kendall, F.T.C.L. To further entice the spirit of gaiety masks were worn by all the dancers, and until the unmasking hour was reached mystery danced with mystery to the delight of all who sought, after the manner of Dr. Watson to unravel a mystery, only to earn Holmes’ rebuke. Old-time and modern dances were indulged in and a delightful supper was served in a number of sittings and reflected credit upon those responsible for its dispensation. The principal event of all dance functions has long been tho Monte Carlo Waltz, and in keeping with this time-honoured custom all present engaged in the merry whirl to woo Dame Fortune’s favour and the lucky recipients, Miss Stubbs and Mr. Raynor and Airs. Nixon and Air. Samson ana Aliss Maule ana Air. Leigh and Aliss McKinnon and Air. Williams were heartily applauded by those less fortunate. Air. Bert Gilroy, as usual, ful filled the duties of M.G. in his inimitable manner and brought a highly successful function to a termination as a late hour was reached. HINTS ABOUT HOSIERY Some excellent hints regarding the mending and preservation of hosiery are as follows:' — When stockings have been darned frequently they show unsightly blemishes above tho heel-line. By tacking a small tuck under the heel the darns are drawn out of sight, but the shape of tho stocking is unharmed. Do not throw away old silk hosiery, as they come in handy for matching when repairs to newer stockings arc necessary. Cut the old stockings across the leg so that the silk will unravel, and uso two strands of this silk for the darning. If the colour is a good match, this is infinitely preferable to most darning outfits. When there is a large hole to be darned, it is a good plan first to get a piece of fine net and to sow it neatly over tho hole. This darning can then be done over this, base much more neatly than would otherwise be possible. To simplify the task of darning dark stockings, give your stocking-darficr a coat of white paint or enamel. There will not be a severe strain on the eyes if this course is followed.
BEAUTY AFTER ’FLU
REJUVENATING TREATMENT A muddy, sallow skin, relaxed contours, open pores, wrinkles round the eyes and on tho forehead are some of tho unpleasing legacies of tho ’flu. Women who cannot spare the time for lengthy treatments will be glad to hear of several simple home remedies which will act on the skin as a change of air or a tonic acis on the general condition. A vigorous astringent treatment for relaxed skin and muscles, which takes about twenty minutes daily, consists in compresses of cotton wool soaked in an infusion of cucumber and elder flower and placed on the face. When illness has dried and stretched the skin, wrinkles can be cured forty-eight hours by a cream of Egyptian origin. For three nights before it is applied the skin must be massaged with a skin food in order to soften it where wrinkles have formed, and then in two days this cream should do its work, filling out hollows as well as removing lines. Ono specialist, has a triple treatment for tho brunette whose skin has become unusually sallow and greasy after influenza. It consists in the use at night of an astringent cream, a morning cleansing with a cream that removes every trace of grease and then a “poultice” on the face of a paste made from herbal powder. This is allowed to dry on the skin and then rubbed off with the fingers or a soft sponge. GERMAN GIRL PILOTS German girls are taking to the. air. There are now more than 50 women who are licensed, jfilots, and they are perfectly at home at the controls of an aeroplane. The best known of the women pilots there is Thea Rasche. She was tho first woman to secure a pilot’s license in post-war days there. Partnered with Ernst Udet, th© German stunting act, she soon acquired the name of “Reckless Thea.”
Elli Bcinhorn and Afarga von Etzdorf, who committed suicide in Turkey after crashing, also made names for themselves by long flights overland. Miss Beinhorn has put several Heinkel machines thio-ugh their paces on long flights to Africa and th© Near East.
Not only in the field of heavier-than-air machines have th© German girls distinguished themselves. Sophi© Thomas is one of th© few, if not th© only, woman in the world eligible to pilot a lighter-than-air dirigible. Wilhelmine Reichardt, on May 4, 1907, was the first Gorman woman to take to the air. She was followed three years later by Kacte Paulus.
