RACE FOR THE DERBY ENGLAND’S GREAT CLASSIC DEFEAT OF COLOMBO HOW THE FAVOURITE FARED (By Telegraph—Press Association —GopyrightJ Received June 7, 1-45 a.m. LONDON, June 6. The race for the Derby Stakes was run at Epsom to-day and resulted as follows:—• The Derby Stakes. A sweepstakes of £lOO each, with £3oo(f added; second 10 per cent, and third 10 per cent, of the \vhole stake; breeder of the winner, £500; for three-year-old entire colts and fillies; 1} miles. WINDSOR LAD 1 EASTON 2 COLOMBO 3 THE DERBY FIELD COLOMBO FAVOURITE INTERESTING BREEDING By the time this appears in prinß the result of the Derby will have been flashed across the world by the electric cables and by wireless, with the news reaching even these far-away shores just as quickly as it does the clubs of London. A little more than a minute after the horses have passed the winning post at the famous Epsom’ course the news reaches Wanganui, ea wonderful is the organisation that has been built up because of the greatest racing classic in the world. The result, ’ printed above, will let) readers know whether the hitherto un« beaten Colombo, a hot favourite fof, this great classic, has been able to stay; tho distance on the trying Epsomcourse. Should Colombo prove the winner he should be able to stand the test of the St. Leger next September and thus join that Olympian band, the winners of thq Triple Crown, it will be unfortunate for Hyperion that another champioa has trodden so hard upon his tracks, urd there will be keen rivalry in thcii first few seasons at the stud, until one or the other proves tho better sire. Ono would say that Lord Derby’s horse would have more to hope from his sire, Gainsborough, than has Lord Glanely’s celt from Manna. However, such a debate need not be developed until Colombo has won the remaining twa classics of the year. Most people in England appeared to regard the result of the. Derby, at any; rate, as a foregone conclusion. Colombo’s price steadily shortened after Ins Two Thousand victory, and it is certain that he would go out one of tho hottest favourites ever, and at least he would be tho hottest favourite since Gainsborough, who won in J9lB at odds-on. A cable received yesterday stated that Lord Glanely, owner of Colombo, paid £6OOO for a half-share in an Irish Swjep ticket on Colombo, drawn by a furt ace-woiker. Lord Glanely aw nounced that Colombo was thoroughly fit to ;ace for the Derby, for which tho winner’s share of the stake was £8852 this year. Colombo had hitherto won
£26.228 in stakes, so it he could place the Derby to his credit his stake-earn-ings would total £35,080.
