MAJESTIC THEATRE
“DUCK SOUP’’ SHOWING. Once again those specialists in rollicking mirth, the Four Marx Brothers, arc to be seen in Wanganui at the Majestic, where “IDuck Soup” began its season yesterday. The title of the picture has as much significance as the titles of their previous successes, such as “Horsefeathers,” “Animal Crackers,” and “Cocoanuts,” but, if anything. “Duck Soup” is even funnier than its predecessors. From beginning to end yesterday’s audiences were kept in a continuous riot of merriment by the fluent patter of Groucho. the insane antics of Harpo, and by the combined efforts of the four brothers. The fuu waxes fast and furious all the way through, and when one of the brothers is off the scene another comes on, and their encounters with one another and with other people keep the audience laughing in spite of itself. Everything they do is so widely impossible, so ludicrous, and so grotesque that it is a delight to watch them upsetting the dignity of ambassadors, playing with diplomacy and, as a sideline, ogling pretty girls. The story deals with the adventure of the quartet, in a mythical republic, Freedonia, the land of carefree dalliance and the home of the knave, which is threatened by revolution. Groucho Marx, as Rufus T. Firefly, becomes dictator of Freedonia, with his brother Zcbbo as his secretary. The ambassador of the neighbouring State of Sylvania is anxious for a revolution in Freedonia as a possible means of increasing his country’s territory, and with this idea in view he attempts to foment unrest in Freedonia by sending Chico and Harpo Marx as spies into Groucho’s territory.. Events move quickly, the humorous’ situations caused by the actions of the Marx Brothers leaving never a dull moment for the audience. War eventually breaks out between the two States, and Harpo and Chico desert to Groucho ? s forces. By a mischance the four brothers and wealthy widow are besieged in an isolated house from which they broadcast a plea for help to the whole world. While succour, in the shape of regiments, tanks, fire brigades, motor-cycle detachments, and speed boats, is rushing to their aid, events reach a climax when the Marx Brothers capture Trentino, the Slyvanian ambassador. The picture is undoubtedly a triumph for the Marx Brothers, and it further enhances their reputation as a comedy combination. Finished portrayals arc also given by the strong supporting cast, notably Louis Calhcrn as the ambassador, Margaret Dumont and Vera Marcall. There is an excellent and varied supporting
