Mr. A- R. Cameron, of the staff of the Christchurch Press, hag been appointed to the head of the staff of the United Press Association to fill the' vacancy caused by the transfer of Mr. T. M. Hinkley to Sydney, states a Wellington Press Association message. Guests registered at Spriggens’ Hotel include: —Messrs. E. L. Akroyd, Geo. Freeman, and J. Wardoll (Auckland): Miss M. Norris, Mr. C. Lawton, and Miss Blundell (Hamurana): Messrs. W. N. Laws, F. A. Nalder. L. Edwards, and A H. Cunningham (Wellington); Mr. and Mrs. G. Black (Marton). Mr. D. T. Allan, junr-, of Wanganui, who is attending the Otago University, has gained the degree of Bachelor of Dental Surgery, and has been awarded a University Senior Scholarship. Mr. Allan will continue his studies at the University for a further year. He is the son of Mr. D. T. Allen, of Liffiton Street. The following are guests at Foster’s Hotel:—Messrs. J. W. Higgins, H. A. Hansen, Mrs. King, Messrs. W. E. Taylor, A. L. Johnson, L. F. J. Johnson, F. W. Aickin (Wellington); Messrs. F. W. Broadhurst and J- A. C. Allum (Auckland); Mr. H- C. Kruse (Sydney); Mr. V. Mackintosh (Palmerston North); Messrs. C. Marsack and J. E- Jenkins (Masterton). By yesterday’s express Mr. and Mrs. F. J. Shanley left Wanganui to reside at the Lower Hutt. During the '22 years that Mr. Shanley has lived in Wanganui he has taken an active part in the Orchestral Society and the Nlale Choir. Besides this, Mr. and Mrs. Shanley have been ever ready to assist in any deserving cause that needed practical sympathy.
Members of the executive of the Wanganui Gun Club paid a tribute at their meeting on Tuesday to the memory of Mr. C. H. Chavanncs, one of the founders of the club and for many years patron, and an enthusiastic marksman. The president referred in feeling terms to the loss the club had suffered through the death of Mr. Chavannes, and members stood as a mark of respect. Mr. Hubert Carter, the well-known New Zealand tenor, leaves Christchurch for London at the end of July. Ho will travel via Australia, whore he will be engaged in concert work and will broadcast several items. He is to present a farewell season of grand opera at Christchurch next -week. For several years Mr. Carter resided in Wanganui, and appeared in several productions staged by the Wanganui Amateur and Dramatic Society. His concerts wore always well received. Mr. L. North, who has filled the position of postmaster at Aramoho for the past five years and who has received notice of transfer to Kaitangata, Otago, was farcwellcd at Aramoho last evening. A presentation was made to him on behalf of the business people and sports bodies, Mr. H. Harris speaking on behalf of the business community and Mr. W. Pepper on behalf of the sports bodies. They wished Mr. North every success in his now sphere, and eulogised the manner in which he had attended to bis duties during his stay at Aramoho.
