During the past week the good folks of Dunedin have lfeen highly gniiified with the appearance at ihe screw steam Ship Queen riding gracefully at anchor about half a mile frofn the jetty. The town was quite taken by surprise at the appearance of n steamer of such dimensions coming so far up the bay—the possibility of wliiuli would have been rfdiculed liut a short lime ago. Few occurrences sinco the.formation of the settlement linve crtDetl forlli such henrty demonstrations of rejuicin]?. The Queen hove in sight of the' lowii on the oVenini? of Friduy last, and-.wao •gi'eet d by a roy"ill salute of 21 guns from tlio cannon on Church-hill; this was resp mdo>) to by a display of fireworks from iho'eieiimer. We took Iho earlicflt opportani.y of visiliilg the vessel: eho is a perfect model, built of iron, and divided into four watertight compartments fitted up with every comfort and convenience for" iho accommodation of n considerable number of passengers.

On deck there is α large saloon elegantly fitted up, and capable of accommodating thirty passengers at table; in the centre of the ship below there is a large cabin containing 20 sleeping berths ; there is also a ladies' cabin. The steerage is large and well ventilated, capable of accommodating 50 passengers. The vessel is propelled by two engines of 73 horse power, the screw being made-to disconnect, so as to enable her to sail under canvass only. She steams 11 knots per hour without the aid of canvass. In addition to the passenger accommodation, she carries a cargo of 200 tons weight and measurement, exclusive of engine room and coal bunkers. We believe that no other Province in New Zealand

can boast of such a vessel, and we cannot help congratulating our fellow colonists at the addition to the shipping of the port. We siucprely crust tliut our respectoil townsman Mr. Macandrew, to whom the Province is indebted in this matter, may meet with such encouragement as may enable him to coniiime the vessel in the traSo tor which eu'u is intended. The Queen has landed a toll cargo of goods, also 12 horses and some rams, from Melbourne She has brought, a number of passengers, all of whom snoak highly of the accommodation and trontmcift on board. She left Melbourne on tlio 10th ult., landing gondii and passengers ut boih Wellington and Lyltclton. It is expected that hor ordinary) passages from Melbourne to. Otago, via Foveaux Straits, will be accompliahpd in six days. The Queen starts on her first trip southward at 12 o'clock this day.— OUign Oaloiiitt, Sep. 3. The screw' steamer Qneeh, Captain Wilson, returned to Dtmedin from her first southward trip yesterday. She loft Port Clialmoi's on Sutnniiiy morning last, rtiul notwithstanding a snutli-wrtterly breeze, and a heavy see with which She hid io eonlend, she accomplished the passage to the Bluff in 24 hours, having come to an anchor in thiit capital 'Mrbou'r at 2 o'clock on Sunan'y mOrn'iiig. ATier a short stay she proceeded to the New ltiver, littt could not get to her Michorage till the following da). She weighed again on Wednesday, at Inilf past 3 p.m., and steaming ngaiuflt a northeasterly liret'/.e, arrived sit'the heads yesterday at 2 ■o'clock, and came up the harbour direct.— lbid.. Sep. 10. THE " CEYLON." This.'tho moat reoeiit addition to thiit noble'fleet of steam vessels which have been constructed fur tho service of the Peninsular and Oriental Steam Packet Compauy, \vas, on Saturday, l'-'th'June, launched from the building yard of Messrs. Samuda Brothers, at Poplar. There, within the brief B|>aeo of eleven months, she ha* grown up to hef present klmost fiuislied state and mnjestic proportioita. Fully musled and rigged while upon t'.ie circumstance extremely unusual, if not unprecedented—and all her internal arrangemenis bcitii? upon the point of completion, her appearance wna more Imposing ihim'that which is ordiuiivily worn by a ves_scl previous to her being launched. Though inferior of size to the Himalaya, and some of the ste'&mcrs in the employment of the company she is yet constructed upon a large scale, her dr., mensio'us I'eiiig:—-Length on deck, 300 feet; beam, 41 feet; depth, 29 feet; burthen, 2,876 tons; displacement at load time, .3 200 toils. She is of 450. horse power, and is destiued for the Indian service. The preparations for launching her were, unfortunately, attended by an acrolein wl-ieh f ™» e(1 l 0 1)b fatal. A shipwright's apprentice happened 10 lie standing on the anchor outside the bow Of the vessel, employed i'l clearing away some planks, a nailin one of which caught a portion of his dress, threw him off lifs balance, and he was preisipituted from a height of between 40 and 50 feet dewn to the floor of-the yard beneath. Assistance was at oncu rendered him, anil he was borne off towards the nearest hospital, but, before he had proceeded many, yards upon the way, life was found to hivve become ; extinct. Shortly before two o'clock, the prepa-ft- ' tibns having been completed, Miss de Sallis, wli»s<e 1 brother is one of the Directors of the Pniinsiiliir ' and.(>rleiital Cotnpawy taking in lit- r hand a br.tile ' of wine, dashed U,'in accordance with'ltie.preserihßd ! form, against the vessel, named her the Ceylon, and ' bane her "Godspeed." The.c was a pause of v few moments, then with a swift, but equable and ' graceful ifabtion. uud aihill the cheers of the wurk- ' men and assembled visitors, she glided down tlie ' ways and into tlie water She was. towed into ihe ' West India Docks, where she will undergo the : necessary operations for her compleiiou. The.ceremony was not inappropriately followed ' By a dejeuuer Kpon a magnificent scale at Lovegrove's Hotel, Blackwall.
