A deputation of merchants waited upon the hon Mr O'Rorke, and urged that Auckland is unfairly treated regarding the East Coast service. They said that the steamer running to Wellington by not calling at Auckland, carried the Poverty Bay trade South ; they also said that the yeal object of the Legislature in granting a subsidy was that of connecting Auckland with the East Coast ports. Napier, Saturday. Ellen Page, a Maori girl aged 11 years, has been committed for trial for forging * cheque. H. B. Andrews, a farmer, has been arrested on a warrant in a criminal action for libel brought by John Wallace, arising out of the Pakuranga provincial election ; he has been released on bail. The Charles Edward has arrived at Manukau. The Sir George Grey cadets have beat . the Napier Cadets in a rifle contest. This corps has been victorious over all the cadets in the North Island. They have now challenged the Otago, Nelson, and Ohristchurch cadet corps. A barn at Waimate containing furniture, guns and oats, belonging to Mr Katene, M.H.R., has been totally destroyed by fire. The loss is £100. Lyttelton, Saturday. The "Wellington sails South at 7 p.m. Cleared — Whitehall, for Sydney j Jane, for Hobart Town. Dttnedin, Saturday. '■ It has been necessary to call a meeting to wind. up the Otago Meat Preserving Company. The first session of the 'Caledonian Societies evening classes was brought to a dose last night. The junction between the Clutha and Port Chalmers railway has been effected. Colonel Cargill has handed over the command of the Volunteer Battalion to Captain Copeland. Tauranga, Saturday. The Luna is expected hourly with the Native Minister. The Superintendent will shortly visit Tauranga respecting immigration matters. Stock of every kind is selling at high prices, and generally business is good. There has been a large native trade this •week. A large number of land speculators are now in the district. Wangantji, Saturday. Edward Lewis, late second officer of the William Tapscott, who shipped on board the barque Malay in a like capacity, fell from the foretopsail yard last night, and was killed instantaneously. An inquest was held on the body to-day, and a verdict of "accidental death" returned. Christchurch, Saturday. The Christchurch Good Templars held a soiree last night, at which at least 350 persons were present at the tea, while 700 attended the meeting which was afterwards held.
