Iα the preparation of this Return some difficulty wad experienced in dealing with the " Immigrants' Conditional Free Grants" in the Province of Auckland. — Upon the whole, however, it appeared most advisable, as they were expressed in acres, to place them in the last column. This column, (the heading of which has been retained unaltered for the sake of uniformity with the Return presented in the Session of 1856,) embraces lands disposed of under various authorities ; but practically no confusion will arise, as all the figures in it refer only to the above mentioned " Free Grants to Immigrants." —Had they been returned under their Money value they would more naturally have appeared as " Provincial Government Scrip and Land Orders."
