EDUCATION: UNIVERSITY OF NEW ZEALAND (PAPERS RELATING TO THE). [In Continuation of E.-5, 1885.]
Presented to both Houses of the General Assembly by Command of His Excellency.
Annual Eepoet of the Senate. In compliance with the 28th clause of " The University Act, 1874," the Senate makes the following report to His Excellency the Governor of the proceedings of the University since the date of the last report :— The Senate met at Christehurch on the 3rd March, which time and place were fixed at the last annual meeting of the Senate, as prescribed by the University Act. The vacancy in the Senate remaining to be filled last year has now been filled by the election of the Hon. E. Stout, by the Convocation. The Senate, at its meeting of this year, has made certain amendments and additions to its statutes at present in force. The statutes made with a view to giving effect to these amendments are herewith submitted for the approval of the Governor. In accordance with the provisions of the University Act, the third meeting of Convocation was held at Christehurch on the 4th May, 1885. At that meeting several resolutions were passed, upon which action has been taken by the Senate. The next meeting of Convocation will be held at Dunedin on the 12th January, 1887. The Bowen prize of 1885 has been awarded to E. Hayter Cox, of St. John's College, Auckland. A statement of the income and expenditure of the University for the year 1885, audited in accordance with the law, is herewith presented. The Senate held also a special meeting at Christehurch, at which the following degrees were conferred, after consideration of the reports of the University Examiners : — The degree of Master of Arts on eight Bachelors of Arts; the degrc. of Bachelor of Laws on one Bachelor of Arts; the degree of Bachelor of Arts on eighteen undergraduates. The number of graduates of the University after examination now on the University roll is, with the above additions, as follows: Masters of Arts, 44; Bachelors of Arts, 77; Bachelors of Laws (not included in above), 2 : total, 123. The number of undergraduates now on the roll of the University is 609. A sum of £1,000 has been presented to the University by Mr. John Tinline, of Amuri, for the purpose of founding a University scholarship in the subject " English Language and Literature." The Senate has made provision by a statute, forwarded herewith, for the necessary competition for this scholarship. James Hector, Chancellor.
