Mackay reported fully on this case, and recommended that the restrictions should be removed, to enable a portion of another reserve which had been mortgaged by the Natives, and passed from them, to be acquired. The last-mentioned reserve contained their houses, &c. This arrangement was carried out, and a portion of the Awahuri Reserve purchased and vested in the Public Trustee. The notice of the Governor's intention to remove the restrictions was gazetted in the usual way in April, 1884 The owner, an aged Native woman, who could not utilize the whole of Lot 14, was in distress, receiving no revenue from it; 33 acres were therefore leased by public auction, on the recommendation of Mr. Wilkinson, Government Agent, to provide a means of livelihood for her Exchanged for other land, in accordance with a promise made in 1873. The deed, with the Governor's consent, is retained in the Native Office pending the completion of the deed of trust vesting the land exchanged in the Public Trustee J. Whisker. 84/1067 4> 150 2 0 J.
