LANDLESS NATIVES IN SOUTH ISLAND: RETURNS RELATIVE TO SETTLEMENTS IN OTAGO, STEWART ISLAND, AND SOUTH CANTERBURY.
Returns to Orders of the House of Representatives dated the 12th July, 1898. Ordered, " That there be laid before this House a return showing,—(l) The number of families placed and settled upon the Tautuku North, Tautuku South, Lord's River, and Waiau Blocks, situate in Otago and Southland, set apart for landless Maoris and half-castes of the Middle Island and Stewart Island ; (2) how many families are yet unprovided with land; and (3) the area required to provide such unprovided families with land." — (Mr. Pahata.) Ordered, " That there be laid before this House a return showing the area allotted to Natives in Lot 3 of Reserve 891, Waihao, South Canterbury, giving the names of the Native owners, and the area allotted to each."— (Hon. Major Stbwabd.)
