The Begistrae, Victoria College Council, to the Hon. the Minister of Education. g IB . Victoria College, Wellington, 3rd May, 1901. ' I have the honour, in pursuance of " The Victoria College Act, 1897," to forward the following report from the Council on the working of the Victoria College for the past year:— Classes were held in the following subjects : English language and literature, Latin, Greek, French, German, mental science, jurisprudence and constitutional history, law, political economy, chemistry, physics, mathematics, mechanics, and geology. The number of students attending these classes was 139, and there were thirty-eight exempted students attached to the College. Of these, seventy-four kept terms. At the New Zealand University Examinations held in November ten students passed the first section and seven the final section of the B.A. degree; one the first section of the B.Sc. degree; four passed the first examination and two the second examination for the LL.B. degree. Of other examinations, one passed the barristers' general knowledge, and one the barristers' final. The number of students at present entered for the year is 140. At the examination for the Queen's Scholarships in December last there were 107 candidates from the following Education Districts, viz.: Wellington, 76; Hawke's Bay, 4; Taranaki, 2; Wan»anui, 6; Nelson, 5; Westland, 11; and Grey, 3. The six scholarships were awarded to scholars from the following schools : Mount Cook Girls' School, Wellington; Te Aro School, Wellington ; Terrace School, Wellington ; South Wellington School; District High School, Westport ; and Masterton School. The College feels greatly the want of proper accommodation, and as yet no site for college buildings has been provided by the Government. It is hoped that another year will not be allowed to pass before proper buildings have been obtained for the College. The Council would also point out that there is absolute need of at least two new professors, one of biology and one of mental science and education. The Council, seeing the large demands that will soon be made upon it for scholarships, has hitherto refrained from appointing such teachers, but their appointment cannot be long delayed. I have, &c, Chas. P. Powles, Begistrar. The Hon. the Minister of Education, Wellington.
