"AMOKURA," TRAINING-SHIP (RETURN RELATIVE TO BOYS TRAINED ON THE).

Return to an Order of the House of Representatives dated the 17th August, 1910. Ordered, " That there be laid before this House a return showing (1) the number of boys who have been trained on the ' Amokura ' ; (2) the number who have obtained positions on trading-boats after having left the ' Amokura,' with the object of following seamanship as a profession ; (3) the number who have joined the navy ; (4) the number who have left the sea on concluding the period of training on the ' Amokura ' ; and (5) the average cost to the State, including repairs, per capita, since the steamer was in commission, of training the boys while on the ' Amokura.' " — (Mr. Anderson.)

The number of boys who have been trained on the "Amokura" : 135, of whom 56 are at present on board. Four more are on their way to join the ship, to make up the complement of 60. 2. The number who have obtained positions on trading-boats after having left the " Amokura," with the object of following seamanship as a profession : 56. 3. The number who have joined the navy : 7. 4. llie number who have left the sea on completion of their period of training on the "Amokura": 16, of whom 8 completed their full course, 1 joined the Union Steamship Company's shore staff, 6 partially completed their course and were discharged for various reasons, and 1 deserted. 5. The average cost to the State, including repairs, per capita, since the steamer was in commission, of training the boys while on the "Amokura": 1907-8, £97 17s. lid.; 1908-9, £117 12s. 9'd. ; 1909-10, £113 18s. 9d: average, £109 16s. 6d. The information given in No. 5 is compiled from the returns for the three complete financial years during which the vessel has been in commission. George Allport, Secretary.
