Copie3 of original Deeds of purchase of Land from the Natives in the Middle Island, with translations thereof, called for by the House of Representatives, and furnished herewith. 1. Deed of Conveyance executed at Akaroa on the 12th June, 1848, for purchase made by Mr. Kemp of lands between the boundary line of land sold by the Ngatitoa in the Canterbury and Nelson Provinces in 1847, and of the Nelson Block on the North ; —arid the boundary of Mr. Symond's purchase, from Milford Haven to the Kaihiku Mountains, and thence to Tokata on the south ; Receipts for £500, June 12, 1848 ; ditto, £500, February 22, 1849 ; ditto, £1000, December 28, 1849 ; together with copy of the plan attached. There is no record or copy of Mr. Symond's Deed above referred to in this office. 2. Deed of Murihiku Block, purchased by Mr, M antell; lying south of Mr. Kemp's southern boundary, and including the whole of the Southern part of the Middle Island. 3. Conveyance by the Natives of Akaroa, of the remainder of their lands on Banks' Peninsula, executed on the 10th December, 1856. 4. Conveyance by the Natives in the neighbourhood of Canterbury, of lands extending from Kaiapoi on the North, to the Rakahauri River on the South. Copies of the Deeds of Purchases in the Nelson Province have been deposited in the Office of the Commissioner of Crown Lands at Nelson. I submit, that copies of the Deeds of Purchases in the Provinces of Canterbury and Otago should , be transmitted to the Resident Magistrates of those Provinces ; to be kept as Records, and for reference when occasion may require. I have transmitted the above, as the only Deeds now registered in this office which have any reference to those Provinces. The original Deed of the cession by the Ngatitoa of their claims to land in part of the Canterbury and Nelson Provinces, is most probably deposited with the records of the late Civil Secretary's Office, New Munster. There are copies of the Deeds of cession by the Ngatitoa and others of the Nelson Provinces, executed in 1853, 1854, 185(i ; but as these are recorded in the Nelson Province, it may be unnecessary to furnish copies of them at the present time.
