Snt, — I have the honor to acknowledge receipt of your letter of 6th ultimo, encloses1 tracing of land set apart by the Provincial Government of Southland as Betunty for a proposed Loan of Forty thousand pounds, and requesting me to examine and report on the value irf the said lan I. I have accordingly examined tlie land, and have the honor to lepo t that, alth>u»h not in my opinion of first-rate intrinsic value (the portion near the river more particularly), briti^ principally of a gravelly nature, and move adapted for pastoral than agricultural p,,,.po>sei, and moreover a portion of il being liable to be annually inundated, it will nevertheless, from the advantages of its locality as a ■whole, lying as it does on each side of one of the most important highways in the Province, always maintain a fair commercial value. The portion subject to flmJs is that comprised between the Dipton and Oreti Rivers, aud along the eastern bank of ihe Oreti from the confluence of the Dipton northwards.
