PAPERS IN REFERENCE TO GRANTS OF LAND TO MILITIA AND VOLUNTEERS. THE SPEAKER OF THE PROVINCIAL COUNCIL TO THE HON. TIIE COLONIAL SECEETABT. Provincial Council Chambers, Auckland, November 23rd, 1864. Sir,— I have the honor to forward herewith a copy of certain Resolutions passed by the Auckland Provincial Council, on the 16th instant, with reference to granting land to the Militia and Volunteers, in recognition of services rendered during the rebellion. SESSION XVII., 1864. extract feom the journals op the auckland provincial council, thursday, novehbeb 16th, 1864. Resolved — " That the Council recognises the claim of the Volunteer Militia Cavalry and Naval Forces, who have been engaged during the rebellion, to grants of land, not so much as payment for service, but more to substantially testify as an acknowledgment by the Government of the valuable and efficient aid rendered in time of need." " That the Council recommend for consideration by the General Government the foregoing resolution, with a view to some portion of the lands in the Waikato, about to be confiscated, being set apart for the above purpose."
