I have the honor to acknowledge the receipt of your letter, dated the 3rd instant, in reply to mine of the 13th ultimo. I regret that the views entertained by your Government are so diametrically opposed to my own,, as to what course will tend most to the permanent development of the gold mining industry, I would ask that careful attention be given to the Report of the United States Commissioners, as to the history of gold mining in the various Pacific States, the causes of its decay, and the remedies suggested. I cannot fully urge my views by correspondence, but I hope to do so personally ere long, having devoted much thought and enquiry to the subject. 1 have, &c, T. B. Gillies. Superintendent.
