D.—3,

No. 34. The Hon. the Minister for Immigration to Mr. G. V. Stewart. Sic,— Wellington 20th July, 1878. Tour several letters came duly to hand. I was glad to hear that you had so successfully arranged for the conveyance of your party to New Zealand, and hope in a few days hence to hear of your arrival all well. In the meantime, directions have been given to telegraph to Wellington the moment your ship is signalled, with a view to the Government steamer Hinemoa being despatched to Auckland (should she be available at the time) to carry yourself and party to Katikati. If, however, it should happen that the steamer is not available, you will, I trust, take the will for the deed. I need not say that the future progress of the settlement depends very much on the continued manifestation of that spirit of selfreliance which has hitherto distinguished the undertaking. On behalf of the colony allow me to give to yourself and friends a hearty welcome to our shores, and to congratulate you as the founder of what promises to be a happy and prosperous community. I have, &c, J. Macandeew, Mr. G. Vesey Stewart, Auckland. Minister for Immigration.

By Authority : Geoege Didsbuby, Government Printer, Wellington.—lB7B. Price, Is. 3d.]
