The most notable feature in the development of the coal fields during the past year is the great increase in the consumption of the Kawakawa coal, owing mainly to the circumstance that the Union Shipping Company have adopted it for their coastal steamers, and report most favourably of its utility as a steam coal. The total quantity of coal imported during the past year is, from the attached return — Tons.
