Campbell, of Edinburgh, to select a competent professor. The Synod has made the liberal grant of £200 for the purchase of books bearing on the subjects of the chair. The Council has much gratification in reporting that the endowment vested in the University for the maintenance and management of the Otago Museum and for the endowment of the Dunedin Athenasum has been leased on satisfactory terms, realizing a rental of £916 13s. 4d. Of this amount the sum of £91 13s. 4d. will, in accordance with the provisions of the Act, be applied to the Dunedin Athenaeum and Mechanics' Institute. The Council reports that during last session 180 of the teachers in the elementary schools attended short courses of lectures by professors of the University on chemistry, physiology, and botany. Of these, 130, after examination, obtained permanent certificates under the Education Act. The Council reports that the School of Mines is now in operation, and has been adequately supplied with the necessary appliances and teaching material. The Council is confident that it will fairly answer the purpose of its establishment. The scholarship, of the value of £40 per annum, founded by the late Sir John Bichardson, the second Chancellor of the University, is this year open for competition to candidates who have attended district schools for two years and the Dunedin High School for not less than one year. An abstract of the accounts, showing the income and expenditure of the University for the year ending 31st March, 1880, is appended to the report. I have, &c, His Excellency Sir Hercules Bobinson, Governor I). M. Stuaet, and Commander-in-Chief of New Zealand. Chancellor.
