CENSUS OF NEW ZEALAND, MARCH, 1886.

Registrar-General's Office, Wellington, 22nd July, 1886. The population of the colony according to the Census of the 28th March (excepting that of the Chatham Islands, from which returns have not yet been received) is shown in the first of the tables presented herewith. Its distribution in counties and boroughs is given in Table 11., and in Table 111. the particulars for the various ridings, road and town districts. A further table showing the populations of the wards in the different boroughs has been prepared, but, being at present deficient in a few details, has not been included in this series. Wm. R. E. ( n) Exclusive of 1,073 persons on board of three German warships lying in Auckland Harbour. ( b) A census of the Maoris taken in February shows the population to have been as follows: Total persons, 41,432, including 39,168 full Maoris, and 2,264 half-castes living as members of Maori tribes. There were enumerated in the European census 201 Maori wives (not included in the above table) of European husbands, ana 1,957 half-castes living amongst Europeans. ( c) The returns from the Chatham Islamls not yet receivea.
