LEASES IN WEST COAST SETTLEMENT RESERVES DISTRICT (RETURN OF DETAILS RESPECTING).

Return to an Order of the House of Representatives dated 29th July, 1890. Ordered, " That there be laid before the House—(l) a return showing the total area of leases, other than confirmed leases, in the West Coast Settlement Keserves District which have had thoir rents reduced by the Public Trustee, and the Act, if any, under which such reductions have been made; (2) a return of all such leases, showing the rental contracted to bo paid by lessees under the regulations for leasing such reserves, and also the reduced rental now to be paid, the basis on which such reductions were made, and how and by what Act or authority such valuation was obtained ; (3) a return of all leases in which the rent is in arrears, and under what authority the Trustee has delayed proceedings to compel payment of arrears of rent under such leases."—(Mr. Taipua.) The Total Area of Leases, other than Confirmed Leases, in the West Coast Settlement Eeserves District which have had their Eents reduced by the Public Trustee : 29,481 Acres. The reductions were made under the powers conferred by "The West Coast Settlement Eeserves Act 1881 Amendment Act, 1884," and by an Order in Council dated 25th October, 1887. The basis on which the before-mentioned reductions were made was the report of a Valuer specially appointed by the Board of the Public Trust Office, under the powers of management conferred by " The West Coast Settlement Eeserves Act 1881 Amendment Act, 1884," in order to enable it to carry out the provisions of the above-quoted Order in Council of 25th October, 1887.
