EDUCATION: THE UNIVERSITY OF OTAGO. [In Continuation of E.-6, Sess. II., 1891.]

Presented to both Houses of the General Assembly by Command of His Excellency.

The Ohancblloe of the Univebsitt of Otago to His Excellency the Goveenoe. Your Excellency,— University of Otago, Dunedin, 10th May, 1892. In compliance with the provisions of "The Otago University Ordinance, 1869," I have the honour to forward the following report of the proceedings of this University for the year ending the 31st day of March, 1892 :— The usual courses of lectures, as laid down in the calendar, have been delivered in the various branches of study taken up by the students attending the University, in arts, law, medicine, and mining. The degrees obtained by the students at the November examinations are as follows: —■ Master of Arts of the University of New Zealand —W. Burnside, with second-class honours in physical science ; A. Campbell, with third-class honours in mental science; Catherine Ferguson, with third-class honours in chemistry; J. Mackenzie, with second-class honours in Latin and English; W. D. Milne; Thomas D. Pearce, with first-class honours in Latin and English; C. P. Salmond, with first-class honours in mental science ; A. Stenhouse, with second-class honours in zoology; J. G. Stuart, with first-class honours in political science ; Marion S. White, with first-class honours in mental science. Bachelor of Arts of the University of New Zealand —W. W. Bird, F. H. Campbell,. E. C. Cutten, Agnes P. Hallenstein, I. W. W. Hunter, H. Kelly, G. Liddell, C. 0. Lillie, W. Mendelson, C. North, N. Paterson, T. Patterson, J. Porteous, J. Askew-Scott, P. V. Siedeberg, J. Smyth, Barbara M. Watt. Bachelor of Scienceof the University of New Zealand — J. S. Tennant, B.A. The following were recorded as having passed the first section of the degree examination (8.A.) : A. Bell, A. Doull, G. P. Graham, W. G. Grave, D. J. Matheson, A. F. McNab, Mary E. Moore, Edith H. Pearce, Emma M. Bainforth, E. Eutherford, W. W. Turner, W. M. Macdonald. Senior scholarships were awarded to J. Smyth in political and mental science, and C. 0. Lillie in physical science. The Eichardson scholarship at the University of Otago has been awarded to W. H. Howes, for three years. The Macandrew scholarship in political economy has been awarded to John Askew-Scott, M.A., for one year. The Women's scholarship at the University of Otago was awarded to Miss Janet M. Poison, for three years. The holder of the Scott scholarship is A. H. Adams. During the past year two vacancies have occurred on the Council owing to the death of the Hon. James Fulton, M.L.C., and the resignation of Mr. John Eoberts, C.M.G. The first vacancy was filled by the Government nominating Sir Eobert Stout, K.C.M.G. The second vacancy occurred shortly after the passing into law of the new Act of Parliament altering the constitution of the Council, and according to the provisions of the Act the graduates of the University met and elected Mr. David White, M.A., as their representative on the Council. The new Act provides for th nomination by the Crown of six of the twelve members, the graduates elect four, and the Professorial Board two; there are some further provisions, which will be found in the text of the Act. The tenure of office of the Chancellor and the Vice-Chancellor having expired, the Council reappointed, for the fifth time, the Eev. Donald McNaughton Stuart, D.D., as Chancellor, and, also for the fifth time, His Honour Mr. Justice Williams, as Vice-Chancellor.
