I am requested to inform you that at a special meeting of the Council of this Chamber, held to-day, the following resolution was unanimously adopted : — Resolved, "That this Council deeply regrets the death of the Hon. John Ballance, Premier of the colony, recognises the earnestness and sincerity of purpose which characterized him, and deplores the loss of so prominent a statesman."
