No. 20, 1896.—Petition of Makebe Hone Mohi Tawhai. Petitioner, who is the widow of the late Hone Mohi Tawhai, states that she is living in great want, she prays that an allowance may be granted to her. I am directed to report that the Committee is of opinion that this petition should be referred to the Government, with the recommendation that the prayer of the petitioner be granted. 21st July, 1896.

No. 30, 1896.—Petition of Haoba Tabeeanui and 168 Others. Petitionebs complain that the law relating to Native lands, as it now stands, is unjust to the Maori race and that they suffer great hardship through the same ; they pray for relief. I am directed to report that the Committee recommends that this petition should be referred to the Government for its earnest consideration. 21st July, 1896.

No. 80.—Petition of Te Eobe Taoho and 119 Others. Petitioners pray that Ngakuru Pene may be appointed Maori constable for the District of Dargaville. I am directed to report that the Committee is of opinion that this petition should be referred to the Government for favourable consideration. 21st July, 1896.

No. 92.—Petition of Heni Thompson. Petitionee alleges that Government have wrongfully taken land belonging to her in Poverty Bay (now part of Ormond Military Settlement). She prays for investigation and relief. I am directed to report that the Committee has no recommendation to make with regard to this petition. 28th July, 1896.

No. 448, 1895. —Petition of Hobomona Bongopaeae. Petitioner alleges that a piece of land called Aorangi, belonging to him, was wrongfully included in the sale to the Crown of the Umuopua Block, Hawke's Bay District; he prays for compensation. I am directed to report that the Committee recommend that the Government should appoint two competent persons to visit the block in company with the Natives interested, for the purpose of determining whether the boundaries as agreed upon, when the original sale to the Crown took place, have been adhered to ; and, if it is found that a mistake has been made, it is recommended that the petitioner be given some compensation. 29th July, 1896.
