No. 35, 1902.—Petition of Hapareta Eoee Pukekohatu and 18 Others. Petitionees pray that some provision may be made for protection of their lands in the Wairau district from floods. I am directed to report that the Committee recommends that this petition should be referred to the Government for inquiry, and suggests that translation into Maori of the reports on the question supplied to the Committee from the Eoads Department be sent to the petitioners. 20th August, 1902.

Petitionees complain that their tribe (Te Aupouri) is not repi-esented in any Council appointed under " The Maori Lands Administration Act, 1900," or "The Maori Councils Act, 1900," and they pray that they may have separate districts appointed under the Acts mentioned. I am directed to report that the Committee recommends that this petition should be referred to the Government. 2nd September, 1902.

The West Coast Settlement Eeserves Act Amendment Bill. The Native Affairs Committee, to whom was referred the above-mentioned Bill, has directed me to report that it has duly considered the same, and is of opinion that it should be allowed to proceed, subject to the amendment as shown in a copy of the Bill attached hereto. 9th September, 1902.
