I have the honour to report, for the information of the Hon. the Minister of Mines, that during the past year nothing worthy of comment or remark has occurred within the Livingstone and Maerewhenua Districts, save the completion of the Mountain Hut Water-race. This work, the object of great expectations from the miners, has been in hand for the past ten years, and would not have been finished yet were it not for the assistance of the Government. I am afraid the water-supply from this source will not come up to the anticipations of the projectors of the race. From some cause or other the quantity of water at the point of supply is out of proportion smaller than the amount obtained from its sources, a large amount being lost in some manner in transit.
