kind and another. The Napier Technical School will teach such sciences as have a bearing on these pursuits, and "endeavour to give youths who follow them a practical and scientific training that shall benefit them by its direct bearing on their life-work. As the effects of the teaching of nature-study in our schools and of the work of the instructor in agriculture begin to be felt it is expected that there will be a demand for higher scientific training in these subjects, and the day classes will endeavour to satisfy this demand. Teachers' training classes were conducted during the year at Napier, Dannevirke, and Gisborne. Instruction was given at these classes in the various branches of drawing, in cooker; in dressmaking, and in woodwork. The students in the various classes were successful in the City and Guilds and South Kensington Examinations. Perhaps the most pleading feature of these examinations was the success of the girls from the Hukarere Maori Girls' School who attended those classes last year. Six of them sat for examination in cookery under the City and Cuilds, and all of them were successful in passing. Such a result must be very encouraging to those who have the interests of the race at heart. R. Clarkson, M.A., Director. Statement of Receipts and Expenditure for the Year ending 31s? Crawshaw, Secretary. Extract from the Report of thf. Waipawa Technical Classes Association. During the past year school classes have been carried on by the Education Board in cookery, dressmaking, and woodwork, but owing to the poor train-service these classes have- not been so widely useful as the contiguity of other schools might lead one to hope. Continuation classes, giving instruction in book-keeping," shorthand, typewriting, Latin, French, English, and mathematics, have been established with great success, and have been largely taken advantage of chiefly by young men in offices, &c, desirous of qualifying for the Civil Service and Matriculation Examinations. ' Owing to the building operations now in progress and which will not be completed till April this year, it will be impossible to inaugurate classes for agriculture and wool-classing till the month of May. As soon as possible, however, a laboratory will lie fitted up, and it is intended to open an afternoon class for farmers both in agriculture and wool-classing, and to establish e\ erring classes in science and in build-imr-construction. Our difficulties are gradually disappearing, and with the monetary help granted by the various local bodies and the subsidies granted thereon by the Government we hope soon to have a well-appointed and flourishing Technical School.
